Overview

What are binary options?

Binary options are a type of financial product classified as an exotic option. They have existed since 1974 and were created by the CBOE (Chicago Board Options Exchange). It wasn't until 2008 that binary options became primarily available to the public; many entities then copied the original CBOE asset type listing.

A binary option allows you to guess whether the option expires in the money-that's it. Some unregulated brokers allow guessing on out-of-the-money outcomes. A simple yes-or-no bet is made, hence the name binary. Contemporary binary options have expiration times from a week down to a few minutes, with many platforms specializing in under-one-day expirations.

Common binary option types

Three primary binary call/put option types you may encounter.

High/Low

You bet whether the price will close above or below a specific level.

Touch / No-Touch

You bet whether the price will reach (or not reach) a defined level at least once before expiry; closing level doesn't matter.

Boundary

You bet that price will stay between two levels (e.g. not above $2 and not below $1) over a set period.

Key points

  • Binary options are an extremely volatile and questionable speculative market; the EU and UK have banned them in recent years.
  • Very few regulated binary options brokers exist, increasing risk to your money.
  • Companies like ours can help recover money for binary options fraud victims.
  • Do your own due diligence and research each platform and user reviews.
  • Never risk more than you can afford to lose.

Are binary options a scam or legit?

Binary options are overwhelmingly a scam and an illegitimate market. They are legal in the US (with CFTC/SEC oversight) but are now illegal in the EU (2018) and UK (2019). The EU ban was partly due to CySEC (Cyprus) granting national approval to many unethical binary options brokers. The US regulatory environment makes participation marginally safer from a compliance standpoint but does not remove the inherent high-risk nature. Professional speculators and investors often deride binary options; they are more akin to gambling than speculation and are a true zero-sum instrument.

Watch out for

Binary options scam types

Binary options robot scams

Robots are often sold as a way to manage your account, involving sharing account information or an API. Scams include high-pressure sales tactics, false statements on returns and success rates, and misleading lifestyle imagery.

Binary options software scams

Software is touted as 'advanced AI' or 'machine learning' that will generate substantial gains. Many providers report high returns from selling the software to others, not from success in the market. Be wary of sales tactics and false imagery.

Binary options trading scams

With many brokers reestablished in nations with little to no regulation, unregistered brokers are common. Questionable or fraudulent data feeds can cause violent bid/ask fluctuations in final microseconds. Use only regulated brokers where possible.

Binary options signal scams

Signal scams involve selling trade ideas (signals) for a monthly fee via text, email, or platforms like Telegram. As with any financial instrument, it is best to avoid signal providers-they profit from your subscription.

How to avoid binary options trading scams

  • •Only use regulated brokers-in the US, check CFTC and SEC; legitimate brokers disclose license and regulator.
  • •Do your own due diligence: read user reviews across various sources; be wary of sites that only review binary options brokers.
  • •If the broker is unregulated, check where they are based.
  • •If you do risk capital, test the broker's data yourself and ensure data feeds are authentic with no abnormal price changes near expiry.

Binary options scam FAQ

Binary options are legal in the US and have overlapping regulatory agencies, chiefly the CFTC (Commodities Futures Trade Commission) and the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission).

Binary options robots typically use executable software or require you to share account information so the robot can trade on your behalf.

Trade copying connects your brokerage account to a 'master' account, which then automatically trades your account for you-similar in concept to robots and signals.

We can investigate your case and provide a comprehensive Investigation Report and a personalized Action Plan that you can use to pursue recovery of your funds.
