Overview

What is digital currency?

Digital currency exists only in digital or electronic form. It is meant to be a secure, decentralized medium of exchange, often using blockchain technology to record transactions. Due to its potential for high returns, it has gained significant attention as an investment-but it is highly volatile and shrouded in anonymity, which makes it a breeding ground for scammers.

Three important digital currencies

Digital Coins

Bitcoin

The original and most valuable digital currency, often seen as "digital gold" due to its limited supply. Created in 2009, it operates on a decentralized blockchain network and has growing institutional adoption.

Leading altcoin

Ethereum

The second-largest by market cap. Its blockchain powers a vast ecosystem including DeFi applications; Ethereum itself functions as a digital currency with unique features and use cases.

Cross-border focus

Ripple (XRP)

Designed for fast and efficient cross-border payments, particularly for financial institutions. It has faced SEC legal challenges, highlighting regulatory risks in the digital currency space.

Key points

  • Digital currencies are a new asset class with substantial opportunities-and substantial risks.
  • Beware promises of quick wealth.
  • Do your own due diligence: investigate wallets, websites, and the people involved.
  • Avoid risking money you can't afford to lose.

Is digital currency a scam?

Digital currencies are not a scam by themselves, but the space is like the Wild West of investing. If you want to invest or trade, work with a reputable and ideally regulated platform. Well-known, trusted exchanges include Coinbase, Bitstamp, Kraken, Binance, and Bittrex. For any other exchange, do your due diligence and research before investing.

Watch out for

Digital currency scam types

Mining scams

Mining creates new coins via Proof of Work. Scams seek individuals to 'invest' in mining projects for passive income. This is less common with newer blockchains that use staking instead of mining.

Wallet scams

Wallets have a public key (address) and a private key (spend permission). Scams encourage you to use their wallets or even ask for your private key-never share it.

Pump and dump

Operators acquire large amounts of an altcoin, push positive (often fake) news to drive buying, then sell at the top. Social media is the primary outlet. Prices then collapse.

Pyramid schemes

Same as Ponzi schemes in any market; fraudsters capitalize on crypto growth to promise overnight wealth. OneCoin is a notorious example in the digital currency space.

ICO / Exit scams

Initial Coin Offerings raised millions for new tokens; when prices spiked, some owners sold and disappeared. Do thorough due diligence on any new digital currency, especially from social media.

High-interest return scams

Legitimate DeFi can offer up to ~10-15% on stablecoins or deposits. Be very cautious about promises higher than that and always read the fine print, including lock-up periods.

Exchange scams

Fake exchanges look legitimate until they pull the plug and take deposits. Others have weak security (e.g. Mt. Gox 2014). Use regulated exchanges with insurance and cold storage for custody.

  • •Use reputable and regulated exchanges.
  • •Consult experts or your financial advisor before investing in digital currencies.
  • •Don't fall victim to false promises and flashy sales pitches.
  • •Choose regulated, licensed exchanges with insured deposits and cold storage for wallets.
  • •Be careful leaving crypto on an exchange long-term; for long-term holding, consider a cold-storage hardware wallet.

Crypto scam FAQ

Scammers and fraudsters exist everywhere, especially in crypto as a new asset class. Be very careful with opportunities in this space. If you were scammed, we can help you understand how to pursue recovery.

Crypto scammers use high-pressure tactics, make you feel you're missing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and show false promises of riches. If it seems too good to be true, it usually is.
